Le Palais du Soleil - coloring (Charles le Brun)

The goal of this long project was to digitally color "Le palais du Soleil" in the famous French castle Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris in France. It is the biggest painting project (380 square meters roof) of Renaissance artist Charles Le Brun (1660) but sadly it has never seen the light...
The present owners of the castle decided to hire artists to complete a colorized version. So 'Shoz Art' (https://www.artstation.com/shozart) and I had to imagine what the colors could look like with the help of historians and experts while respecting the original artwork and still showing the original sketching lines.

The painting is supposed to represent the four seasons and many mythology characters. I worked mainly on the spring part (right) and winter part (top), also on the blue sky background. Many weeks of work were necessary to complete the whole coloring.

It was an honor to work in the steps of Charles Le Brun. The final artwork is projected in the huge living room inside the castle (where it should have originally been painted). It's even video animated : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnowpPp66Ag
